The city ofCuenca— in full,Santa Ana de los cuatro ríos de Cuenca— is the capital of theAzuay Province. It is located in thehighlandsofEcuadorat about 2,500meters above sea level, with an urban population of approximately 400,000 rising to 700,000 inhabitants in the larger metro area. The centre of the city is listed as a UNESCOWorld Heritage Trust sitedue to its many historical buildings.
